The process of massage is as complex as each individual who experiences it. Add to this the additional complexity of the interrelation of the massage therapist and the client, and there can be even more complexity involved. Communication is a critical component in tailoring a massage session to be the most effective possible. I have found that, in some cases, even what may seem to be an 'unimportant' comment by a client can be the most important information given. The human body is an incredibly complex organism and is yet to be fully understood. That said, it is we who have potentially the greatest insight into ourselves. As in many things, we are the ones to make the change. A therapist facilitates, assists. Massage makes us more aware of our own body and therefore allows a greater understanding and ability to deal with the stress and injury that will certainly manifest over the course of our lives.
It is my belief that to create a better state of health, one must be better informed and have greater self awareness. To this end I attempt to inform my clients about the mechanisms at play in the mind and body, and how massage affects those mechanisms. An awareness of anatomy, physiology, and a positive outlook are a few things that I incorporate into my sessions.
Of course, there are times when you just want to forget it all and relax. This, too, is all part of the Technique and Style of each session and is why communication can be so important.
